This book is not your typical novel about the Holocaust. The main characters, three musicians, possess a magical, mesmerizing power that enables people to block out the tragic events that are occurring to and around them. Through the years, the boys develop their gifted musical talents. Instead of choosing the professional path of playing in a symphony, they take the alternative path of becoming a traveling musical group. The effects on the villagers and on the soldiers of their harmonies and songs are hypnotic and healing.Having been fortunate to have the author, Scott Blumenthal, discuss his book with our book club, we learned of his extensive research into locales, musical instruments, the Holocaust, clothing, and lifestyles. His dedication to detail added to the richness and authenticity of the book.

The Kiss Scott E Blumenthal 9781624320088 Books Reviews
Scott Blumenthal is no stranger to the page. By day he is an editor for an educational publisher, by night he's the author of a couple of kids' books. However, he has stepped far outside his usual realm with an immaculately researched, beautifully written book about the darkest period in European history and what small rays of light it might have contained.
Captivating from the first page! This novel should be required reading in every high school in America! His ( Mr. Blumenthal's) wonderful writing style is easy flowing and engaging. You most likely will find it hard to put down. This woven tapestry of characters in such a dark time in human history, conjurers up such a rich bounty of emotions and thoughts, it really leaves you craving his next novel. This truly would make a must see motion picture....
In the best of times, and even in the most horrifying of circumstances - perhaps particularly then - music has the power to reach in, grab ahold of our most poignant nostalgias, dreams and fears, and make them resonate until they drown out the current reality and transport us to another place. Until it stops.
We all know this from our own ordinary experiences with life and music. Blumenthal connects to that in each of us, and gives us three main characters who can take that magic to a level that can nearly, yet beautifully, serve as countermeasure to the horror of the holocaust.
A friend on Facebook mentioned that she was reading this book, and that she couldn't put it down. It's been a while since I've read something I "couldn't put down", so I thought I'd give it a try. I was immediately captivated by the interviews that were woven into the story of the three musicians and their journeys of friendship, family, love and war. This is one of those books that you just don't want to end. Bravo, Mr. Blumenthal. Bravo!!
I loved The Kiss. It was such a great novel with interesting and different characters. I loved experiencing them grow into men and women. The book made me want to know more about Klezmer music and experience it while I read. This book was very well-written and the story sucked me in. That is rare these days! I highly recommend it. ****spoiler alert**** Make sure you read the ending somewhere in private, not in public....
Ahhh the Kinnor- David’s Kinnor??
Yes Drummer- add this to your list
There is a reason we need to read The Kiss,
To remember never to forget the horrors that can exist or the immense power of music to give comfort and transform
even the most horrible to the possibilities of joy.
I read through this book the 1st time enjoying the writing style, the format and soaking in the beauty of the language, the amazing characters- who will forever be in my memory bank and of course the music . It reads like an opera.
When I read it the 2nd time the reality of the story and the
uglies made it difficult knowing that the end never ends-neither the good or the evil.
I have listened to Tschaikovsky , Beethoven and the greats many times- Last night at the symphony I listened again.
Yes Drummer
There is a reason to read and listen again…and again
We must find a musician out there to put this to music so we can spread the message.
The Kiss is a TREASURE.
This is a great book it made me think, feel, laugh, and learn. This book is different from all other holocaust books. Why? (1) The author accurately resurrects both a forgotten time and a lost place the Jewish half of Rovno, Poland (Rivne, UA). That community no longer exists, except in this book. Scott Blumenthal has meticulously reconstructed it and populated it with families who lived there before the War. (2) Into this life, he weaves a vibrant, earthy story of music and musicians. Yes, a holocaust / music story; and masterfully done. I have never before read a holocaust / music story; and it is delightful. (3) This story explicates the interaction of modern belief and Hassidic mystery, ordinary people grappling with the spiritual effect that great music has on the human heart and soul. I highly recommend this book. And it is a must-read for every musician or music teacher, and for everyone who thinks deeply about the holocaust, or who wants to.
